This series explores flag imagery as an ever-changing reflection of a country’s attributes and/or land-right assertions. “Flag of the Americas” is based on stone formations from the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu. “Japan Sun Rising” emerged after the massive earthquake and tsunami of 2011. The American flag with its barbed-wire stripes was created during the post 9/11 era – its multi-layered construction and labor-intensive process achieved the necessary dark areas, with each star and stripe created through a deliberate method of hand-stitching.
